『放浪記』『浮雲』などの代表作で知られる作家・林芙美子の記念館。昭和16年（1941）8月から昭和26年（1951）6月にその生涯を閉じるまで住んでいた家を保存・公開しています。山口文象（1902～78）設計によるこの家は、数寄屋造りの京風の特色と芙美子らしい民家風のおおらかさをあわせ持っています。芙美子の没後、夫で画家の緑敏（1902～89）が暮らしていましたが、平成2年（1990）新宿区が購入し、平成4年（1992）3月22日に記念館として公開しました。 建物の内部の各室には立ち入れませんが、緑敏のアトリエが展示室となっており、新宿歴史博物館に保管されている大量の林芙美子資料を年数回の展示替えを行い公開しています。また、ガイドボランティアによる解説を受けることができます。春と秋に事前申込制で建物内部の特別公開も開催されます。
