Aparecen manchas irregulares de color marrón oscuro o marrón grisáceo que son muy comunes en el rostro, pero también pueden surgir en el escote y los brazos, y se dividen por tipos.  ¿Cuáles son los tipos de melasma?  Grado 1 (epidérmico)  Es el grado más reciente, cuando las manchas tienen menos de un año. Presenta una tonalidad marrón oscura y un delineado definido. Ocurre en la epidermis, que es la capa más superficial de la piel. Es un tipo que responde bien al tratamiento.  Grado 2 (dérmico)  Es el grado en el que las manchas tienen más de un año. Tienen una tonalidad marrón clara o azul grisácea y un borde menos visible, más difuso. Debido a que las células hiperpigmentadas están más profundas en la piel, en la dermis, el tratamiento es más lento.  Grado 3 (mixto)  Es el grado en el que las manchas tienen más de cinco años. Es el tipo más severo de la condición, presentando tonalidad marrón y azulada y de diversos tamaños.
