Hey there, curious mind…
Ever wondered why sometimes it seems like your brain is betraying you? How can you make better decisions in your professional and personal life? And better understand the world around you?
Crack your brain open (figuratively, that is!), improve your critical thinking and decision making with cognitive biases and mental models, and understand the hidden forces that influence how you think and act. But more importantly… master them!
Why ThinkBetter?
— Weekly Wisdom: Unlock a new "brain concept" every week. That's 54 mental models and cognitive biases a year.
— Relatable Realness: We sprinkle real-life examples to help you truly grasp the essence of each mental model or cognitive bias. Because, let's be honest, theory is cool but real-world application is cooler!
— Your Day-to-Day Decoder: Discover how these tricks affect your daily life. Be it in your career, during your grocery store run, or even in your favorite TV show binge sessions.
— Gorgeous Graphics: Because we all love beautiful things, each mental model or cognitive bias is paired with a gorgeous illustration.
— Like a training program: rather than throw these at you in a lengthy blog post, we dive into each weekly and send you reminders, prompts to reflect on them and more.
— Pick a path - choose from one of our default paths that groups and delivers to you the most relevant models and biases for your goals ("Thinking Clearly", "Making Better Decisions", "Master Your Attention" and more)
— Did you really get it? Test your understanding of these models and biases with quizzes for each.
— Not just read it… hear it… each of the 54 cognitive biases and mental models comes with podcast-style audio-narration so you can listen to it on the go.
— Explore Professional Application — get better at your professional life by exploring how you can leverage these concepts to make better decisions and stress less.
What are mental models and cognitive biases?
Picture this – your brain is like a massive toolshed. Each tool (or set of tools) represents a way of understanding the world. Some tools are perfect for some jobs (like a hammer for a nail) and terrible for others (ever tried cutting a tomato with a hammer? Spoiler alert: It's messy!).
Each of these tools in your cerebral toolshed is what we call a "mental model". These are frameworks or blueprints that help us make sense of the world, make decisions, and solve problems. For example, the "supply and demand" mental model helps us understand why those concert tickets are so darn expensive!
Now, imagine if sometimes, when reaching into your toolshed, your hand has a sneaky little magnet that draws it to a particular tool, even if it's not the best for the job. That sneaky magnet? That's a cognitive bias. It's a predictable pattern where our judgment goes a tad awry.
For instance, ever noticed how you might love a song just because it's constantly on the radio? Even if initially you weren't a fan? Or, have you ever bought a gigantic pack of cookies, telling yourself you'll just eat one a day, but then find the empty packet next to you while binge-watching your favorite show? Yep, that’s a bias right there. Our brain says, "Future me will TOTALLY have more self-control", but present you says, "I mean... just one more cookie can't hurt, right?"
We’ll help you master these tools and magnets so you can make better decisions and live a better life.
