McFaddin-Ward House Museum vs The Field House Museum Usage & Stats
The 12,800 square foot home comprises six living areas, seven bedrooms, and six full baths with a half bath located on the first floor. The home was originally built by W.P.H. McFaddin’s sister, Di Averill and her husband W.C. Averill in 1905 - 1906. The architect, Henry Conrad Mauer, chose the Beaux-Arts style as it gained popularity throughout the United States during the late nineteenth century. Architectural features include applied ornamentation, colossal-order porticos, and symmetry in both interior and exterior designs. The house is historically significant as it is the last mansion of its type and style built in southeast Texas after the 1901 Spindletop oil boom. The Field House Museum is a dynamic museum and historic site focused on the Field family. The historic house was once the home of Roswell Field, a noted St. Louis attorney, and the birthplace of his son, Eugene Field, the father of the personal column and "Poet of Childhood." While living in the home, Roswell Field became the key attorney in the Dred & Harriet Scott Freedom Suit when he formulated the legal strategy that propelled the case to US Supreme Court. The house is designated a National Historic Landmark and has an attached museum featuring the Field House Museum's many collections, traveling exhibits, and Eugene Field Library.
