The architecture is so beautiful it takes you breath away, and the location between the mountains and the lake is absolutely magical! Visiting Chillon Castle is like stepping back in time. Each room reveals yet another part of its history, as well as the daily life and habits of the court of the House of Savoy and of the Bernese Bailiffs. Discover the 14th century murals in the Duke of Savoy’s bedchamber and in the chapel, and see the large collection of wooden chests and furniture in all the rooms. The four great reception halls, where sumptuous banquets and feasting took place in the past, will plunge you right into the life in the Middle Ages. But never forget that Chillon is a fortress. It is protected by the lake but, facing the mountain, defensive towers and the sentry walk on the ramparts served to keep enemies at bay. Many weapons are on display. Throughout the years, this thousand-year-old citadel has inspired the imagination of writers and artists, from Rousseau to Victor Hugo, from Delacroix to Courbet. Legends galore sprung up here, including the most famous one of Bonivard, rendered immortal in the poem by Lord Byron - The Prisoner of Chillon. AUDIO TOUR OF THE FEDERAL LANDMARKS OF THE CITY OF BERN Do some exploring on your own! Use the Swiss Parliament’s audio tour app to visit the Parliament Building and a number of Bern’s other famous landmarks. You can choose between a selection of audiovisual guided tours. The guided tour of the Parliament Building provides interesting background information about the place where Swiss politics is conducted. The app takes you to all the important rooms in the building such as the chambers of the National Council and the Council of States, the lobby and the domed hall. There is also plenty to discover outside. Take a tour around the federal government precinct, and learn some interesting facts about key buildings along the way (including the National Bank, the west wing of the Federal Palace, Parliament Square and the Bellevue Hotel) or take the anniversary tour ‘1848 – an incredible story’, which traces the origins of Switzerland’s constitution. USING THE APP The BUNDESBERN app is free. Install the audio guide app on your device and select the desired language. Plug in your headphones and you’re all set! The app provides images of all featured points of interest. The tour of the inside of the Parliament Building is ideally suited for open days when visitors are free to wander through the building. You can take the outdoor tours at any time. Of course, you can also enjoy the tours from the comfort of your home, while on the move or in your hotel room. ROUTE You can follow the suggested route or adapt it as you wish. If you turn on location services on your device, your position will be shown on the map. As you approach a point of interest, a message will appear on your display and you can play the relevant audio commentary. Please note that continuous background use of location services can significantly reduce battery life.
