In the realms of physics and engineering, especially in the domains of fluid dynamics and hydrometry, volumetric flow rate (also referred to as volume flow rate, fluid flow rate, or volume velocity) signifies the volume of fluid that traverses a given point per unit of time. It's typically denoted by the symbol Q, with the SI unit being m³/s (cubic meters per second). Another unit occasionally used is sccm (standard cubic centimeters per minute).
In physics and engineering, mass flow rate represents the mass of a substance passing through a point per unit of time. It's measured in kilograms per second in SI units and in slug per second or pound per second in US customary units. The common symbol is ṁ (pronounced "m-dot"), although sometimes μ (Greek lowercase mu) is employed.
Occasionally, mass flow rate is referred to as mass flux or mass current, as seen, for instance, in Fluid Mechanics, Schaum's, and other references. In this article, we adopt the more intuitive definition.
