72%يعدُّ هذا السؤال من أكثر الأسئلة إثارةً للجدل في الساحة العلمية فيما مضى، تمَّ التأكيد على أن الجينات الوراثية لا تلعبُ أيَّ دورٍ في تشكيل السلوك الإجرامي المُعادِي للمجتمع، إلَّا أنَّ دراساتٍ حديثة مُدعمَة بأدلة أثبتت أن العوامل الوراثية لا تَقِــلُّ أهميةً عن الظروف البيئية في تطوير بعض أنماط السلوك الإجرامي ركزت إحدى الدراسات على احتمالية قدرة الجينات في التسبب بجعل الشخص مُجرِماً "عدائياً " مدى الحياة؛ أي يتسم بالعدائية تجاه المجتمع أثناء الطفولة؛ الأمر الذي يمكن أن يتطور لاحقاً لأعمالٍ إجرامية عنيفة أو خطيرة تستند هذه الدراسة إلى التصنيف التطوري للسلوك المٌعادِي للمتجمع؛ حيث تمَّ من خلال هذا التصنيف، الذي استخلصته الدكتورة تيري موفيت، تقسيم مجتمع الدراسة لثلاث مجموعات أو مسارات هي: 1- المجرمين الدائمين منذ الطفولة life-course persistent offenders 2-المجرمين خلال فترة المراهقة adolescent-limited offenders 3-الممتنعين عن الجريمة abstainers أشارت موفيت إلى أن العوامل البيئية والبيولوجية الحيوية وحتى الوراثية يمكن أن في تقود الفرد في إحدى هذه المسارات تشير نتائج الدراسة
