The UK is mobilizing around plans to attend Monday’s funeral, Similarweb data shows. These plans have shown up in elevated traffic to hotel and accommodation websites as well as to railway provider Eurostar.

Key takeaways

  • Traffic to U.K. hotel and accommodation websites spiked 27% on Sunday, September 11, the day after King Charles announced that the Queen’s funeral would be a bank holiday.
  • The change in traffic on 9/11/22 was an additional 1.2 million visits from the prior day.
  • Traffic to eurostar.com increased 61%, in large part due to plans to travel to London for the Queen’s funeral

Hotel and accommodation traffic up sharply

With the Queen’s funeral announced to be a bank holiday on Saturday, September 10, 2022, traffic on 9/11/22 to hotel and accommodation websites saw a 27% spike versus the prior day. The UK is seeing travel increase as a result of the previously unanticipated day off, whether it be to travel to the funeral or for some other three-day weekend travel for U.K. travelers.

Eurostar worldwide traffic also up

Global traffic to Eurostar.com rose 61% on Sunday 9/11/22, a substantial increase despite poor weather during that weekend, likely indicating that the rise in travel plans was related to plans to come to London for the Queen’s funeral.
