Tuesday’s arraignment of former President Trump in a Manhattan criminal court was a big day for his social media service

The Truth Social social media service created by former President Donald J. Trump had one of its biggest days yet on Tuesday, as Trump turned himself in to face criminal charges – before publicly blasting prosecutors later in the day.

The indictment was also a big day for news websites – although not necessarily outside of the normal range.

Key takeaways

  • The Truth Social website, truthsocial.com, attracted over 479,000 visits on Tuesday, according to Similarweb estimates. That’s about 190% higher than an average day earlier this year. These statistics are for desktop and mobile web traffic from within the US and do not include the usage of Truth Social’s mobile apps.
  • The service has had bigger days in the past, for example nearly 550,000 visits on May 19, 2022, when Trump was on the road for Republican candidates like Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and Truth Social itself was in the news because of speculation about whether Trump would return to Twitter following its pending purchase by Elon Musk.
  • The news site attracting the most traffic on Tuesday was CNN, edging out the New York Times.

Twin peaks for Truth Social Traffic

Tuesday’s traffic total beat the previous recent peak of about 398,000 visits on March 18, when Trump himself first predicted that he was about to be arrested and called on supporters to rally to his defense.

Tuesday’s surge in context

Since the launch of Truth Social in early 2022, the website has actually had bigger days – but not many.

The sites winning the news cycle

The daily traffic pattern favored broadcasters, with CNN edging out the New York Times and Fox News also higher in the rankings than it is on a typical day.

Tuesday was a big news day – but not necessarily a record traffic driver. The days after the news of the indictment was confirmed were about as big as the day of Trump’s court appearance.
