Spring Sends US Shoppers Searching for All Things Outdoors on Amazon

In preparation for the April 8th solar eclipse across Mexico, the US, and Canada, keywords containing solar eclipse glasses were at the forefront of shoppers’ minds in March and the #1 keyword search term on Amazon, with a total of 4.5M clicks. In second place was the documentary Quiet on the Set, which received 3.2M clicks. The #3 top keyword was “easter basket stuffers” with 1.8M clicks.

Consumers look to refresh their backyards

Now that spring has sprung, consumers are ready to get back outside, and preparations are being made. Mosquitos are top of mind as Spartan Mosquito saw over 1200% growth in unit sales, with 55.2K units sold. Cutter, another brand name in insect repellent, saw 410% growth with 69.9K units sold. But backyard beautification came in second, as Mademax, a company specializing in solar fountains for bird baths experienced 934% growth with 53.4K unit sales.

BBQ season is just around the corner

Next on the list – getting ready to fire up the grill and enjoy meals outside. Blackstone is the brand that is top of mind as consumers search for grills and accessories. Combined, the company received a combined 3.8M clicks across a variety of keywords.

Ninja’s outdoor grill made the list with 333.5K clicks and holds 85.5% of the top brand share. Both Blackstone and Ninja enjoy more branded search volume than Weber, indicating a stronger brand association with consumers and cost-conscious consumers prefer their more affordable grill options.

Spring fitness boom

The Sports & Outdoors category trended toward workout gear and accessories as consumers look to get back into shape and back into shorts and bathing suits as the weather turns warmer.

Plenty of gear that can be used for outdoor workouts made the top keyword searches in this category. Yoga mat saw an increase in searches of 65.4%, water bottle saw 118.8% growth, weighted vest 114.8%, and ankle weights 24.4%. Standard workout equipment also made the list, with dumbbell sets seeing a search increase of 1029.1% and resistance bands 261%.

Looking at performance by subcategory, units sold are in the millions with Yoga at the top with 17M units sold, followed by  Strength Training Equipment with 5.3M units sold, and Accessories in third with 2.8M units sold.
