Rover remains the strongest growth story, while Chewy’s traffic was down 9.6%

Pet retail growth was scarce in December, but the dog walking and pet sitting services business Rover continues to gain both traffic and market share.

Key takeaways

  • Chewy’s December traffic was down 8.7% year-over-year and 3.6% compared with November.
  • Bark Box was down 23.3% year-over-year, although, on a month-over-month basis, it was up  25.8%.
  • Rover’s web traffic was up 9.6% year over year and 9.4% compared with November, signaling ongoing growth. Wag Walking, despite being in a similar business, has not managed to show the same kind of consistent growth.
  • PetSmart saw modest gains, with traffic up 1.7% year-over-year and a share of traffic within this peer group to 18.2%, up from 17% in December 2021.

We track these statistics as early indicators of business growth and revenue.
