AeroPlayne (formerly AeroPlay) is a reimplementation of the AirTunes protocol (also known as AirPlay®) for Android. It allows the device to appear as an AirPlay® speaker (receiver) on your network. Compatible devices can then play (send) to the device, which will relay that sound to its speaker or headphones, as would any other audio application. The app can also record incoming audio as a file, as an .M4A file (AAC and HE-AAC+ formats supported), or a lossless FLAC file. A variety of preset bitrates are supported. You can also apply real time audio effects, such as equalisation, reverb, gain and bass boost. Availability is limited to the effects built in to your device. Audio can be "relayed" to a Chromecast receiver, with full, live metadata and art updates. You can also use the relay to listen using a compatible streaming media player on your local network, such as a web browser, QuickTime Player, or VLC. The relay can be used as a "source client" for an external IceCast server, allowing broadcasting to the wider internet. Finally, if the sending device advertises the ability to be remotely controlled, it will act as that device's controller, allowing it to play, pause, fast-forward, rewind, and change the device's volume. Note that this is subject to sender's implementation of this service, which is idiosyncratic at best. This app contains no adverts or tracking. Analytics are mostly related to whether certain niche features are used. You can disable this completely at any time, and will be presented with this option when the app is first opened. KNOWN ISSUES: The app was written to be compatible with the protocol used in version 1 of AirPlay®, in particular the version used by an AirPort Express® device. Therefore it inherits the issues associated with these devices. - As of macOS Ventura (and perhaps before), using AirPlay direct from within Safari's video element (as used by YouTube, etc) is NOT supported. I suspect this now requires AirPlay® version 2. This issue also affects Apple's official AirPort Express® devices. For reasons unknown, the iOS browser version does still work. The workaround is to use the app as an AirPlay® output device in the Mac's Sound Control Panel.
