Build Compound Words is a literacy tool developed by a speech-language clinician and special educator who share a passion for educating children with diverse backgrounds and learning abilities. We use photos of real people and objects, rather than cartoons, to help students make real world, concrete connections between pictures and text. Our photos and clear directions allow students to focus on targeted skills without visual or auditory distractions. Students build and segment 24 compound words through four skill levels: emergent (pictures only) to mastery (text only). Build Compound Words is designed for use with students in therapy or independent work settings.
Build Compound Words provides comprehensive practice for:
- Students who are developing language and literacy skills (ESL, ELA, ELL, D/HH, SL, LD, ASD, DCD)
- 2nd grade students working at grade level on CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.4.d: Use knowledge of the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of compound words.
