Modern fugitive emissions standards require a different approach to sealing valves with packed stuffing boxes. Even more than before the balance between leakage and stem friction becomes more important. For this reason it is crucial to tighten packing with a calculated force that keeps the balance between low emission levels and acceptable stem friction.
This tool calculates the gland bolt torque for valves that are packed with Chesterton style 1622 Low Emission Packing or Chesterton style 1724E Low Emission Sealing Sets. It requires the entry of the stuffing box inner and outer diameter, the stud diameter and number of studs and the entry of the lubricant used when tightening the valve. The tool works both in Inch and Metric units.
The generated torque is the torque that should be applied to the gland nuts.
The installation instructions of the packing used should always be followed in detail.
When using the torque in this tool and following the installation instructions of the packing, the leak level of the packing is guaranteed to stay below 100ppm, as measured following EPA Method 21, for duration of 5 years*.
