The glycemic index (GI) is a measurement system that ranks foods based off their effect on your insulin and blood sugar levels. Only foods with carbs can have a GI value, and all carbohydrates are not the same, for example white bread has a much higher glycemic index than whole grain bread. Fiber, fat, and protein help to lower the glycemic index and glycemic load of the meal.
A Glycemic index of 55 or less is considered low. 56 - 69 is considered medium, and above 70 is a high gi food. Foods with a low glycemic index value are the ideal choice because they digest slowly, resulting in a slower & smaller rise in blood sugar levels.
Studies have indicated that the low GI diet can result in weight loss, reduce blood sugar glucose levels, reduce insulin senstivity, and lower the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and also help manage pre-diabetes. Additionally, some studies improve cholesterol levels and may reduce the risk of certain cancers
