The user can solve random or custom addition problems with small and large numbers. The number of digits in the numbers can be set. The column addition method is also known as columnar addition, long addition or longhand addition. Review by funeducationalapps.com: "iDevBooks educational math apps make math enjoyable and entertaining. One of my sons was struggling with math and I must say the use of iDevBooks math apps has really helped him. He now enjoys his math.." Review by professor Tim Pelton Tim Pelton, assistant professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Victoria reviewed the sister app of column addition - column subtraction: “Because no wrong entries are allowed the app provides a passive form of positive reinforcement and your child will likely improve in both confidence and competence with respect to the procedure.” The interface of Column Addition app is similar to Column Subtraction. Endorsed by teachers Rita Zeni, Ecole Sandy Hill Elementary, Abbotsford, BC, Canada: "The Math apps by Esa Helttula allow students to practice and reinforce the specific computation strategies taught in class, with as much or as little scaffolding as necessary. They also provide individualized feedback to each student, with an immediacy that is not always possible through pencil and paper practice. Being able to adjust the level of difficulty to suit their needs is also very motivating for the students. I am so glad to have come across this great educational tool!" Easy to Use The numbers are aligned automatically and the user can concentrate on solving the operations for each column. Carrying is handled automatically and it is visualized using a nice animation. After the user solves the operation for each column the correct answer will fly to the right place. The unit of the answer will fly under the column and the ten is carried over the next column. If the user presses the wrong button the answer will appear above the keyboard but it will not move. 25 Six-piece Jigsaw Puzzles The puzzles are pictures of cute animals. Every time the user solves one addition problem, one more piece of a six-piece picture puzzle is revealed. The picture puzzle feature can be turned off and on at any time. Features: - The user can add 2 or 3 numbers - The app can provide random problems or the user can input his own numbers - Each number can have from 1 to 5 digits - The current operation for each column can be hidden - The operands of the current operation can be highlighted - Colors of the interface can be changed - The speed of the animations can be set - Different interface on iPhone and iPad - 25 6-piece jigsaw puzzles of animals are shown one piece at a time - The jigsaw puzzles can be hidden Other iDevBooks math apps iDevBooks math apps have been reviewed and endorsed by Wired.com, IEAR.org, Edudemic.com, Teachers with Apps, and other respected sites and organizations. Big Math is an iPad app for elementary school children to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of big numbers. It has both portrait and landscape orientation. It has a dolphin theme, and when the child has finished a set of problems, a dolphin sound (whistle, scream, yell or motorbike) is heard. The child starts by picking what he or she wants to work on in the Settings screen of the app. Settings options include: * Entering a name and message for the child who will be using the app. The name and message show up throughout the app. * Entering the options for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and/or division. For addition, the child can add 2 numbers, either 2 digit or 3 digit, or 3 numbers, either 2 digit or 3 digit. For subtraction, the child can subtract either 2 digit or 3 digit numbers. For multiplication, the child can multiply 2 digit or three digit numbers. For division (long division), the child can divide with a 1 digit, 2 digit, or 3 digit divisor. The app allows regrouping, where the child can "carry" in addition, multiplication, and division or "borrow" in subtraction and division. The child can elect to have problem sets timed. Once the settings are set, the child goes to the area he or she wants to practice (Big Add, Big Subtract, Big Multiply, or Big Divide), selects the number of problems to do, and starts doing Big Math! Dolphin sounds are courtesy of Dolphin Encounters in the Bahamas! Try it and enjoy!
