A Liturgia é “o exercício da função sacerdotal de Cristo. Nela, os sinais sensíveis significam e, cada um à sua maneira, realizam a santificação dos homens; nela, o Corpo Místico de Jesus Cristo - cabeça e membros - presta a Deus o culto público integral” (SC 7). “A Igreja procura, solícita e cuidadosa, que os cristãos não entrem neste mistério de fé como estranhos ou espetadores mudos, mas participem na acção sagrada, consciente, activa e piedosamente, por meio duma boa compreensão dos ritos e orações” (SC 48). A Liturgia das Horas é a oração da Igreja a Cristo e com Cristo. Nela, o próprio Cristo continua a exercer o seu múnus sacerdotal por intermédio da sua Igreja. A Liturgia das Horas, que tem como característica a santificação de todo o curso diurno e noturno do tempo, inclui o Ofício de Leitura, as Laudes, a Hora Intermédia (Tércia, Sexta e Noa), as Vésperas e as Completas.
