There are over 15 million people who speak the language of Laos. It is closely related to Chinese. Spoken Lao is mutually intelligible with the language of Thai. The two languages are written with slightly different scripts but are linguistically similar.
There are no articles in Lao like "the" or "a" in English. Lao nouns do not have a grammatical gender. And the verbs do not have grammatical tenses, such as go/went/gone.The grammar is similar to Chinese except for some word orders. The numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, ...) sound pretty much like those of Chinese. And both languages have tones.
