Owlet: GlowGrid vs Multi Base Blocks Applications Usage & Stats

Owlet: GlowGrid is one of a series of apps that use the Owlet GlowBoard manipulative. The specific focus of GlowGrid is using the GlowBoard to understand arithmetic operations like addition and subtraction. Students turn the dials on the GlowBoard to model arithmetic operations with the colored lights. The GlowGrid app communicates in real time with the GlowBoard, so the app reflects student work with the GlowBoard. GlowGrid has five modes for five arithmetic operations: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, and Division with Remainders. Each operation has five different activities. - Explore: Students turn the dials to model arithmetic equations on the GlowBoard. The tablet shows the students the equation that they are modeling. - Make: The app challenges students to use the operation to make a target number in different ways, i.e. Make 11 in 9 different ways. - Solve: The app challenges students to solve arithmetic problems with the GlowBoard. - Find: The app challenges students to solve missing number problems with the GlowBoard. - Create: Students can create their own problem and use the GlowBoard to demonstrate the solution.

Multi Base Blocks Applications contains four apps to help young children proceed from the concepts of trading and place value through to the written algorithms for addition and subtraction. Preschool children can practice trades and learn about place value and grouping using the applications Win A Block and Trade A Block. School aged children can use the applications Addition and Subtraction to bridge from performing the operations with blocks to carrying out the operations with symbols. On the same screen, students model the problem with multi-base blocks and are guided to perform trades and moves to arrive at the answer. While the students move the blocks, symbols are adjusted to match the student moves through to the final answer. Parents or teachers can help children by making choices concerning grouping size, how many digits or columns in a problem, repeating a problem, creating a specific problem or generating a random problem. The applications are not intended to teach operations in another base, but to help children become familiar with the algorithmic processes so that they can more easily learn addition and subtraction in base 10.
