SEAlly vs RASTR Usage & Stats
SEAlly© has been created by MEDASSET-Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles and iSea in the framework of the Green Fund funded project “Fishers, Sea turtles & Sharks: Alliance for Survival”, and has been updated in the framework of the continuation of the project, “Alliance for Survival II”.
A key aspect of the project is the active involvement and engagement of citizens on the basis of Citizen Science, as well as the use of innovative technology tools. Primarily, SEAlly© was developed so that fishers, port authorities, divers and all sea lovers can record sea turtle and/or shark sightings in the Mediterranean Sea and thus provide valuable primary data. Through the continuation of the project now users can record batoids, as well. SEAlly© is the first mobile application, which allows multi-taxa recording and in particular species of which abundance is not well known. Both sea turtles, sharks and batoids have a long lifespan, slow growth rates and migrate large distances. Thus, data collection through this application will increase scientific knowledge about sea turtles, sharks and batoids.
The project “Fishers, Sea turtles and Sharks: Alliance for Survival» was funded under the financial programme of the Green Fund "Natural Environment and Innovative Actions", Strand "Natural Environment Management Actions", Measure "Innovative Actions with Citizens", Budget: €49.690, Beneficiary: MEDASSET, Partner: iSea
The project “Alliance for Survival II” is funded under the financial programme of the Green Fund “Natural Environment and Innovative Actions “, Strand “Natural Environment Management Actions 2020”, Measure “Innovative Actions with Citizens”, Budget: 49.670 €. Beneficiary: iSea. Partners: MEDASSET HELLAS, Department of Animal Production, Fisheries and Aquaculture of the University of Patras.

Sea turtles live in many of the world’s oceans and thus, researchers around the world study many different aspects of sea turtle biology. We have designed this app so that researchers can log turtle capture, nesting, or product data and location. By mapping these records, researchers can keep track of data collection locations, capture history, and monitor conservation efforts in areas of interest. Researchers have traditionally used paper data sheets to collect sea turtle information. However, depending on the projects being conducted, there may be several data sheets for one project. These data sheets may be degraded by rain, humidity, or fire. It is our hope that sea turtle researchers will utilize RASTR to help consolidate and supplement physical data sheets, and digitally store their data on a cloud-based system that is not subject to the same degradative effects. Thank you for using RASTR to aid in your data collection. We hope that it will be a useful and enjoyable experience.
