Mkhedruli is a Georgian script that has been used for writing the Georgian language since the 11th century. It evolved from the older Georgian scripts of Asomtavruli and Nuskhuri, which were used for religious texts and inscriptions from the 5th to the 9th centuries. The development of Mkhedruli is attributed to King Vakhtang III of Georgia, who wanted a script that was easier to read and write than the older scripts. Mkhedruli was designed to be more cursive and fluid, with rounded forms and fewer vertical lines, making it more efficient for writing. Mkhedruli quickly became the dominant script for writing Georgian, replacing the older scripts for secular texts and eventually also for religious texts. Later it was used together with Nuskhuri-- where it was used for capital letters or decorated letters at the beginning of a manuscript. Nuskhuri is one of the three historical scripts used for writing the Georgian language, along with Asomtavruli and Mkhedruli. It originated in the 9th century and was used primarily for religious texts. Now, there is some renewed interest in these historical scripts and their use in calligraphy and modern typography.
