We take altitude into consideration along with speed and distance walked or ran to create a "feels like" distance. We call this logic: fuzzy logic because it sounded good at the time. Even so, it means, if you walked all the way uphill for 5km, the feels-like value might be 8km for example, so you get rewarded for the extra effort of walking up a hill.
