How nara works
1) Create Characters
A character is a representation of a individual - their personality and what they value. Descriptions of characters are created by answering a set of questions. There are also "character types" that can help you start the process. A character type is a character description that comes up more often than others and can be a complete character description on its own or it can provide a starting point.
2) Write Stories
A story is a representation of an interaction between two characters and is written from the perspective of one of the characters (i.e. the narrator). Think of the story you would tell someone if they asked you "So, what happened there?".
A story explores one of the following questions:
- what led them to feel this way or what has to change for them to feel differently?
- how might they feel after what happened or how they might feel if things changed?
Both the story and the narration are comprised of a series of specific behaviors or feelings, called "plot points". Each plot point has a list of specific examples that can be viewed separately. There are also "story themes" that can help you get started or you can write a story from the beginning. A story theme is a story that comes up more often than others and can be a complete story on its own or it can provide a starting point.
3) The Narration
Once a story is written, nara reads the story and gives you an answer to the question about the narrator's perspective. This answer is generated by the custom AI that powers nara.
After the Narration
1) Personalize the Story & Narration
Stories and narrations are complex, nuanced and layered. So we've provided a few options for you to be able to personalize your stories and narrations. First, there is a notes page for each completed story where you can write down any thoughts you have on your stories and the narrations. Second, the plot points provide a number of detailed examples. You can use these examples to help personalize your stories and narrations.
2) Compare Perspectives
One of the unique features of nara is that you can write stories for any character's perspective. This is particularly useful if you're trying to explore both sides of story to see what each character's perspective is in the moment and how they are similar or different from each other. We’ve created some opposing stories in the “Story Themes”.
3) Explore "What If"
You're not limited to writing one version of a story or character… you have the freedom within nara to really explore "what if"
- Maybe you're not sure about how you crafted a character or story
- Maybe you don't fully understand a character, but you know how they've behaved and you want to explore their possible motivations
- Maybe you want to see how a character might feel if things changed or were done differently
- Maybe you want to explore what has to change for a character for them to behave or feel differently
