Here’s a deeper dive into the top 5 ecommerce companies in the US
The top 15 sneak peek might have you eager to learn more, so we’ve taken the opportunity to show you Similarweb Sales Intelligence in action with a deep dive into the top 5 ecommerce sites in the world.
1) Amazon.com
TL;DR: Amazon.com, once again, reigns supreme.
With 2.07 billion views in November alone, Amazon is to United States consumers like water is to plants (reminder to water that plant you forgot about). Seriously, an estimated 167 million people in the US are Amazon Prime members, and for reference, the US population is around 339 million people.
So it doesn’t really catch us by surprise that direct traffic was far and away responsible for the most traffic in November; the brand awareness is unmatched!
But what is everyone looking for on amazon.com? Short answer: literally everything. Longer answer: let’s check out the most popular organic keywords for the month of November to find out.
- amazon
- amazon prime
- prime video
- amazon customer service
- uggs
- amazon prime video
- crocs
- ikea
- amazon.com
- amazon fresh
Prime Video got two spots on the top 10, and a lot of people were searching for Uggs, whose boots and slippers consistently rank as some of the most popular holiday gifts in the United States.
2) eBay.com
In second place, we have another usual suspect: ebay.com. The place where sellers auction off everything from Justin Timberlake’s half-eaten french toast to entire US towns, and usually some more legitimate, practical things in between. While nowhere near our #1, the online global marketplace saw a whopping 543.7 million views in November 2023, which isn’t too shabby.
You may notice Ebay.com has the most even device distribution out of our Top 5, nearing a 50/50 split. If we check out the audience demographics, we see that while 25-34 remains as the largest consumer age range, the older age ranges are higher than most of ebay.com’s competitors. Almost 11% of their audience is over 65, and statistically, older audiences are far more likely to browse on their desktops as opposed to mobile devices.
What was driving ebay.com’s stellar traffic? If we look at the site’s marketing channels split, we see that direct and organic search take up nearly all traffic for November.
Let’s dive into the top 10 organic keywords for November to find out exactly what ebay.com’s audience was searching for:
- ebay
- ebay motors
- ebay login
- ebay official site
- ebay.com
- eb
- eba
- e bay
- eby
- eby usa
People made a crazy number of typos when trying to reach this 4-letter website in November; but hey, they got where they needed to go.
3) Walmart.com
In third place, we have walmart.com with a grand total of 492.7 million views in November. We’re not too surprised, given the infamy of Walmart’s Black Friday sales. Almost gone are the days of people camping outside the night before Black Friday ready to trample their fellow customers to get the newest blender at 40% off.
The deals, however, are here to stay. Traffic was up 26.9% in November, an increase of over 100 million views. People are sticking to the Add to cart button and ditching the whole “I’ll get to that flat screen TV first if it’s the last thing I do” mentality.
Okay, but how can we be so sure Black Friday sales lead to said traffic increase? Let’s check out the top keywords to see what people were searching for in November to land them at walmart.com:
Aha! “black friday” was featured in 3 of the 10 most popular keywords in November. Additional insights include: jobs at Walmart are highly sought after and an alarming number of people haven’t realized Walmart only has one letter “L.”
Spelling is hard, but building a solid ecommerce website is apparently super simple for walmart.com. Let’s check out a few of its website technologies:
- Conversion & Analytics: Omniture
- Content Delivery Network: CloudFlare
- Audio Video Media: Vimeo
- Retargeting: Facebook Custom Audiences
4) Etsy.com
Next up, we have etsy.com, with a total of 276.1 million visits in the US in November, an increase of 6.34% since October. This creative marketplace is seriously killing the ecommerce game; as of November 2023, they had over 6 million active sellers, and well over 90 million buyers.
While etsy.com is by no means small, a majority of their sellers are small businesses. Buying from smaller, independent brands was a consumer trend in 2023, and based on an American Express survey conducted in November, 85% of American consumers said they would shop ‘small’ during the 2023 holiday season. The bottom line? All this shopping small had a huge impact on Etsy.com’s traffic performance.
How creative does Etsy get to keep that traffic coming? Let’s review etsy.com’s marketing strategy and find out.
As we see above, direct and organic search took a majority share in November. Paid search and Social, however, had a pretty good turn out.
A powerhouse like etsy.com sure doesn’t skimp on marketing spend; between September and November 2023, Etsy’s PPC spend was $73.9 million. Talk about big spenders.
And if we check out a breakdown of their social visits for November, we can see which platforms were most successful when it came to driving traffic. Naturally, Pinterest was the winner by a long-shot; those Pinterest boards aren’t going to make themselves!
Let’s just say this traffic surge was no DIY feat; It was DIWTHOWT (do it with the help of website technologies). Let’s check out what etsy.com is using to craft the perfect ecommerce site:
- Payments: Worldpay
- Conversion & analytics: Facebook domain insights
- Content Delivery: Fastly
5) Target.com
Last, but certainly not least, we have American retail giant target.com with 217.4 million visits in November. That’s a 32.62% increase in visits from October. Impressive, especially when you realize that’s an increase of more than 53 million visits!
Target has been dominating the retail game since the early 1900s, and now it’s a key player in the ecommerce game, too. They’ve really hit the bullseye.
How does a brick and mortar store gain a foothold in the ecommerce space? Let’s check out target.com’s marketing strategies to find out:
Organic search for the win! What were they searching for? Let’s take a look at the top organic search terms that led people to target.com in November:
- target
- target black friday
- black friday deals
- target red card login
- target careers
- target red card
- target.com
- target near me
- target jobs
- target gift card balance
Our takeaways: Black Friday brought the internet crowds swarming, people really want to work at Target, and they will save 5% on their order with their Red Card if it’s the last thing they do.
You can’t win over the ecommerce space without a little help from your friends (or in this case, website technologies), so let’s check out the technologies propelling target.com’s success:
- Marketing: Adobe Marketing Cloud
- Publisher Ad Server: Google Adsense
- Ecommerce platform: IBM Websphere Commerce

Here’s a deeper dive into the top 5 fastest-growing ecommerce companies in the US
1) Honeybaked.com
Honeybaked.com, a food retailer specializing in, yes, honey baked ham, came in the top spot for the fastest-growing ecommerce companies in the US in November. Winner, winner, ham dinner?
We’re pretty impressed with that bounce rate, too: 30.25%! Not bad, not bad.
If we check out the traffic patterns over the last two years, we see an annual trend: a steep peak around Thanksgiving (November), and a smaller peak around Easter (March – April). So while honeybaked.com is riding a high from the Thanksgiving rush, we can pretty confidently predict that this high is temporary. Maybe see you in Spring?
When traffic is good, however, it’s really good. Using Similarweb Digital Marketing Intelligence, we can check out keyword seasonality. In the broad category Food and Drink, honeybaked.com takes 8th place in the entirety of the United States for November and December. Food and drink celebs, one might say.
The US is really in its honey baked ham era, if that’s even a thing.
2) Mielleorganics.com
Now for our runner up: natural hair care product company, mielleorganics.com, with a hair-raising MoM traffic increase of 278.83% in the United States.
Looking at the site’s visits over time, we also see that November has brought in the most traffic of any month in the last two years. Congratulations are in order!
If we look at a graph for the same time period as above, but following marketing channels instead of website visits, we see a similar spike in paid search, which far and away drove more traffic than any other channel in November.
So what’s with the spike in paid search? Checking out the Paid Website Analysis in Similarweb’s Digital Marketing Intelligence, we see that PPC spend was waaaaay up. Both desktop and mobile web spend increased by over 450% from October to November of 2023. Cha-ching!
That extra spend sure did pay off in the traffic department. Looking at sales signals for mielleorganics.com, we also see that the company had a few product launches. New products often = new traffic.
With all this celebrating, we almost forgot about website technologies! Let’s check them out:
- Ecommerce platform: Signifyd
- Mobile messaging: Attentive
- Payments: Afterpay
3) Beachwaver.com
Up next we have hair care company beachwaver.com, with a 206.61% increase in traffic from October – November 2023. There must be some correlation between mobile web browsers and those who desire beachy waves seeing as 91.5% of traffic came from Mobile Web in November.
Taking a look at beachwaver.com’s marketing channels, we see that social traffic accounted for a pretty high percentage of web traffic compared to the other websites on this list.
If we head over to the website’s social overview, we can see that the majority of said social traffic came from Facebook and Tiktok.
Popping on over to Tiktok, strictly for work-related research purposes and definitely not to head down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories and cute little corgis, we see that The Beachwaver’s Tiktok account has over 1 million followers and over 12 million likes. Wowza!
Since we are totally focused and not at all distracted by Tiktoks, let’s head over to #4 on our list before we really get side-tracked.
4) Theordinary.com
Don’t let the name fool you – theordinary.com’s 204.5% MoM
traffic increase between October and November 2023 was anything but ordinary. In fact, just one month earlier, between September and October 2023, traffic actually decreased MoM by 5.35%.
How did theordinary.com finesse such a comeback? Maybe It’s Maybelline, maybe it’s this Byrdie article from November 17th, advertising The Ordinary’s early black Friday deals (much more likely, we’d say).
If we continue sleuthing, we can find the top referring websites, and Byrdie.com was #1 in November. Okay, so we’re quite sure it’s not Maybelline.
Traffic mystery solved, case closed. Now let’s wrap up with a few of website technologies theordinary.com is using to keep things anything but ordinary:
- Video Ads: TikTok advertising
- Payments: Adyen
- Publisher Ad Server: Doubleclick
- Conversion & Analytics: Quantcast
- Ecommerce Platform: Salesforce Commerce Cloud
5) Balsamhill.com
You may have seen balsamhill.com in October’s issue of the fabulous, ultra-interesting, worldwide sensation that is Similarweb’s Top 50 Ecommerce Companies in the World.
Yup, that’s right. In October, Christmas decor brand Balsam Hill took 4th place for fastest-growing ecommerce company in the entire world. In November, they took 5th place in the United States, with a 189.49% MoM increase in traffic between October and November 2023.
Balsamhill.com is seriously sleighing the traffic and engagement game this holiday season.
So what are all these people looking for? Two words: Christmas trees. 8/10 of the site’s top keywords for November had either the word “christmas” or “tree” or both.
If we check out the website’s product ads for November, we see that the top 4 are all either Christmas trees or Christmas tree accessories. In fact, nearly all of the 35 pages worth of ads are Christmas trees!
And if we take a look at the search ads, we can also see that there were some very merry deals going on for Black Friday through to Cyber Monday.
Let it snow with traffic and engagement, my friends!
