Key stats: The most searched keywords worldwide
YouTube dominates the top searches, beating Facebook: YouTube owns 4.5% more traffic share than Facebook, but traffic from both search terms is decreasing, with ‘youtube’ losing 1.3% and ‘facebook’ losing 3.19% from January to March 2024.
‘Amazon’ is the biggest ecommerce term: Amazon owns 1.5% of the traffic share for the top keywords, with 64.7% of its traffic coming from organic sources. Shein experienced a 2.5% growth in traffic from January to April, and 87.6% of its traffic is driven by paid advertising.
Over 19% of the top 100 searches relate to sports: Of those 19%, 7% are related to English football. The term ‘NBA’ has achieved the highest search volume, reaching an average of 90 million monthly searches.
‘Weather’ is the 5th most-searched-for keyword: This term achieved 148 million searches per month, and variations of it appear among the top 100 search terms in various languages.

Key stats: The most searched keywords in the US
Global warming is impacting the world of search: The top keyword, ‘weather’ sees an average of 83.5 million total searches per month, and as the sun starts coming out to play in the summer, the increase in traffic from the search term continues to go up, with a 5% increase from February to March 2024.
Basketball dominates sports-related searches: Among the vast array of sports-focused terms, ‘NBA’ receives the highest average monthly searches at 40 million, which also saw 60% growth from January to April. Additionally, the data reveals that the majority of highly searched sports keywords are related to basketball.
The internet can’t get enough of Trump: ‘trump’ is by far the most searched person getting a staggering monthly search volume of 6.9 million monthly searches.
Morgan Wallen is making headlines: Among the keywords experiencing the most significant growth, ‘morgan wallen’ saw a staggering 4959% increase, followed closely behind by ‘NPR’ which saw a 4785% uplift.

Key stats: The most searched keywords in the UK
The weather obsession continues to grow in UK Google searches: As the most searched term on Google in the UK, ‘weather’ sees an average of 18.7 million searches per month – but let’s be honest: the answer is always probably just ‘rain’.
14% of the top 100 searches are football-related: Among these, the term ‘premier league’ achieved 37.6% growth in searches from January to April, seeing 7.2 million average monthly searches.
Amazon is looking to outbid ecommerce competitors: The terms ‘amazon’ and ‘amazon uk’ have collectively achieved 15 million monthly searches, a large percentage of which is driven by paid advertising.
Top Google searches can inspire your market research: Understand what your target markets are searching for and work that knowledge into your marketing or pricing strategy. This will not only be their interests and hobbies, but also include hints into the current economic climate, eg. ‘universal credit’ (20), ‘bet365’ (26), ‘premier league’ (9), and ‘temu’ (67).
What do the most Google searches tell marketers?

- ‘youtube’ was the most searched query in the world, and the YouTube domain achieved more clicks than the search engine giant Google
- What are searchers looking for? The search intent for the top 100 global searches is mostly navigational (49%), closely followed by informational (48.5%).
- The average zero click is at 51% for the top 100 terms. Despite the appearance of SERP features for many of these queries, users still choose to click on them.
- In the top 1,000 list, the most searched words on Google are in English.
Paid traffic in the top Google searches 2024
- Amazon.com gets the most paid clicks with a weekly average of 6.4 million clicks, followed by temu.com at 3 million clicks
- The most expensive search term in the top 1,000 is ‘google ads’ with a CPC of $9.91
How to find the most searched terms on Google
To create these top 100 lists, we used our Keyword by Industry feature in our Keyword Research Tool, here’s a quick breakdown of how to do it:
- In the SEO or Acquisition Research suite, go to ‘Keyword Opportunities’
- Click on ‘Keyword by Industry’.
- Select ‘All Industries’ as shown below, or – to get a more targeted list – choose a specific industry
- Select either ‘Worldwide’ data or a specific country
Then, to sort by search volume (like we did) or for other further analysis, download the full list and filter from there.
Methodology
- We updated this page in May 2024, based on data from April 2024. The data we used was for the first three months of 2024, giving you an accurate view on the search landscape and top searches between January 2024 and April 2024
- The lists are for worldwide, US and UK specifically
- We have included: average monthly search volume, traffic (how many of the searches end up going to a website), organic and paid traffic (split by whether or not a searcher clicked on a paid ad) and behind the scenes we looked at CPC (the average cost per click to capture the traffic searching this term)
