Truth Social Surges More on Trump World Anticipation of Indictment Than on the News

3Min.April 4, 2023

Trump’s prediction that he would be indicted drove about 398,000 visits to truthsocial.com; news that it was actually happening brought over 314,000 on Thursday

When news broke that former President Donald J. Trump was about to be indicted, Trump loyalists rushed to Truth Social to voice their opinions – but the traffic surge was not as great as when Trump himself predicted that prosecutors were about to make their move and asked supporters to rally to his defense.

Key takeaways

  • When Trump initially predicted his coming indictment on March 18, the daily traffic to truthsocial.com surged to about 398,000 daily visits from within the US – 140% higher than the average traffic for previous days this year, according to Similarweb estimates.
  • When major news outlets reported that a Grand Jury had voted to indict the former president on March 31, truthsocial.com got about 314,000 visits – 70% higher than days earlier this year.
  • Trump’s Truth Social social media services are both an app and a website, but we can see the reaction of web visitors more immediately. In February, the iOS and Android versions of the app, combined, had about 839,000 monthly active users, while the website attracted about 1 million unique visitors, according to Similarweb data. All these estimates are based on usage from within the US.
  • The indictment news goosed the monthly traffic to truthsocial.com, although not as much as the classified documents search of Trump’s Mar-a-Largo club and residence did over the summer.

A surge and an echo

Here is the surge following Trump’s initial announcement that he was about to go into battle with prosecutors, followed by the smaller traffic bump following the news that the indictment was actually happening.

A March surge, although not compared with the Mar-a-Largo search

According to preliminary estimates, traffic to truthsocial.com topped 5.8 million visits in March, up from 4.5 million in February. The all-time peak came in August 2022, when the site attracted about 9.8 million visits from within the US.

With Trump due in court on Tuesday, April could be bigger.
